A study on multi-word verbs: Centering on phrasal verbs

This study investigates the characteristics and differences of the two main multi-word verbs, that is, phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs. Multi-word verbs consist of a lexical verb plus a particle. In phrasal verbs, the particle is an adverb and in prepositional verbs it is a preposition. Phrasal verbs resemble prepositional verbs superficially, but there are syntactic and phonological differences between them. For example, the particle of a prepositional verb must precede the object, while the particle of a phrasal verb can either precede or follow the object. However, when the object is a pronoun, the pronoun follows the preposition (unless the particle is stranded) but precedes the particle of a phrasal verb. And the particle of a phrasal verb is normally stressed, whereas the particle of a prepositional verb is normally unstressed. This study also looks into the movement of the particle of a phrasal verb in the syntactic perspective, as well as in the pragmatic perspective. Givenness of information, that is, whether some information is old or new can play an important role in sentence structures. The degree of communicative dynamism of information can also influence the sentence structures.
