홀리스틱 교육과 배려 관점에서의 사회과교육의 의의 및 적용

The Significance and Application of Social Studies Education in Holistic Educational Perspective and Caring

홀리스틱 교육은 배려를 핵심 가치로 삼고 있음과 동시에, 그것을 구현하는 넉넉한 배경이기도 하다. 이 연구는 홀리스틱 교육과 배려의 상보적 관계를 고려하면서, ‘사회과’라는 교과 속에서 배려가 어떤 의의를 가지는지, 그리고 그것이 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 배려를 지향하는 홀리스틱 교육은 공동체 및 타자와의 조화롭고 균형잡힌 관계를 강조한다. 이는 곧 사회과교육이 목표하고 있는 좋은 시민의 자질과 부합한다. 특히 다문화 사회의 징후를 드러내고 있는 최근의 한국 사회는 다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 구성원 간의 조화와 통합을 중요한 과제로 안고 있는데, 바로 이러한 측면에서 시민의 자질 함양이 매우 중요하다. 문화적 소수자에 대한 배려는 인간의 존엄성 보호와 공동체의 안정적 발전을 위해 필수적으로 요청되는 가치이기 때문이다. 사회과교육은 그러한 요청에 응답해야 할 책임이 있다. 그리고 그러한 응답은 결국 홀리스틱 교육 정신의 구현에 다름 아닐 것이다.

Holistic education is not only what pursues caring as a core value but also a background for embodying it. This paper aims, considering the complementary relationships between holistic education and caring, to inquire what meanings caring has and how it can be applied in social studies education. Holistic education intending to realize caring emphasizes the harmonic and balanced relationships among the members of community. This coincides the competency of good citizen, which social studies education aims exactly. Especially, it is so important to cultivate such competency paying regard to recent situations in Korea, because more and more symptoms of multicultural society are showing in Korea. Caring for the cultural minority is basic and essential value for protecting human dignity and developing community. Social studies education has to responsibility to such changes and demands, and the response is none other than the embodiment of the ideal of holistic education.
