One of the major concerns of this thesis is to understand visual aspects of tea ceremony in Joseon Dynasty(1392~1910), by looking into the scenes from Gyehoe-do(契會圖), the painting of the gatherings. Gyehoe(契會), which can simply be translated into 'the gathering', was a social activity for scholar-officials in Joseon Dynasty to have various kinds of associations in both public and private aspects. And Gyehoe-do is a painting of Gyehoe to commemorate occasional events held at the gathering. The main intention was in remembrance of the gathering and it includes the lists of participants, preface, and colophon, all of which explain us by whom and how the gathering was held. Through the scenes of Gyehoe-do, this thesis tries to explore how the tea ceremony had taken place in Joseon Dynasty. Since one of the major concerns of this study is tea ceremony, it qualifies to the Gyehoe-do that represents the actual scenes of tea ceremony. It is noteworthy that almost no exception was taken to the banquet scenes of Girohoe-do(耆老會圖) or Giyeonghoe-do(耆英會圖), the painting for the gathering of the elder officials with high authority, produced during 16th and 17th Century, to include the tea ceremony in the lower left hand or right hand corner. Moreover, Dasi(茶時), which is the tea time for the general officials before duty, can be demonstrated by numerous paintings among Gyehoe-do, which usually depicts one or two persons boiling tea beside a banquet hall. They seem to be Damo(茶母), the attendants for the tea ceremony. To discuss the method of making tea represented in Gyehoe-do, almost every scene describes it as 'boiling(烹茶)' on the stove, unlike today's 'infusion(泡茶)' by pouring boiling water into a teapot. It is a noticeable fact that even the Joseon Dynasty had gone through many centuries, the tea ceremony depicted in Gyehoe-do did not show drastic change in terms of method and style.
