In this paper, I'd like to explain the meanings of the English spatial prepositions with respect to their semantic similarities and semantic differences. And I'd also like to explain the various usages of the English spatial prepositions in the sentences, by dividing their meanings into the basic meanings and the secondary meanings. For these purposes, I analyzed the spatial meanings of the English prepositions into the basic semantic elements such as: [Loc], [Dir], [via], [Pnt], [Cnt], and represented their basic meanings as the simplified image schemas. In chapter 2, I dealt with the meanings of the prepositions "at, on, in" that expressed the spatial positions, with regard to the spatial dimensions. Moreover, I considered their usages in terms of the basic meanings and the secondary meanings. In chapter 3, I discussed the meanings of the prepositions "to, onto, into" that expressed the spatial movement direction. I compared their meanings with the meanings of the spatial position prepositions, and classified them into the basic meanings and the secondary meanings. In chapter4, I explained the meanings of the prepositions "past, across, through" that expressed the spatial movement paths. Their meanings can be explained by comparing with the spatial position prepositions and the spatial movement direction prepositions as well. In addition, I tried to explain their various usages in terms of the basic meanings and the secondary meanings.
