This paper aims to find out what kind of the tea bowl Geumhwaojan (金花烏盞)was. Geumhwaojan means the tea bowl with gold floral designs on a black glaze in Goryeodogyong which was the Chinese book about Goryeo in 12C. This article employs two methods to reach the purpose. The first method is to study of literature and the second one is to research the ceramics of Goryeo(高麗)and Sung(宋) dynasty. The results of this study provide that Geumhwaojan was not the tea bowl with a black glaze(黑釉) but that of celadon with Cheolchae(鐵彩) which means iron-based underglaze technique. In addition, it is worth mentioning that Geumhwaojan had particular relevance to Geumhwajeongwan(金花定碗) used paintings with gold(金彩) in Ding kilns(定窯). Also, it must be noticed that the blue-black glaze of the celadon of Cheolchae bears a curious likeness to that of Chien ware(建盞). Further research should cooperatively be studied by North and South Korean scholars and consistently need to be linked with Goryeo relics housed in overseas museums etc.
