Political Character of King Heongang and of Choi Chi-won in 「The epitaph of the temple Sungbok」

「The epitaph of the temple Sungbok」, written by Choi chi-won by the order of King Heongan(886), is full of explanation about the charity and the political situation of King Keongmun and his children King Heongang, King Jeongkahg and King Jinseong. This paper intends to review the political Character of King Heongang and of Choi Chi-won in 「The epitaph of the temple Sungbok」. That is a policy of selecting officials among the new rising group of the students of the National Academy, the students studying in the Dang Dynasty, And he strengthened the royal authority and continued good diplomatic relations with Dang through them. Besides, after having ordered to write 「The epitaph of the temple Sungbok」, he made clear lineal descent of royalty in succession to the throne of King Keongmun's family. Choi Chi-won received the order from King Heongang about writing 「The epitaph of the temple Sungbok」 after he had come back to Ssilla. It seems that in the epitaph he highly praised the achievements of King Wonsung, King Keongmun and King Heongang, because he had a sympathy toward King Heongang's empolyment-policy of new bureaucrats on the basis of scholarly achievement and of pro-Buddhism. It could contribute to consolidate the legitimacy and the authority of the succession to the throne of King Heongang. It could also consolidate Choi Chi-won's political position and could be useful for deploying his ability through this process.
