This paper attempts to examine a change of the ruling group through a yangban family's experiences since the rule of Japanese imperialism with oral history approach. The Yoon family had been one of yangban families in Gangjin-gun before the abolition of social rank system. The family participated in an anti-Japanese movement with radicalism under the rule of Japanese imperialism. From the 1945 Liberation to the Korean War period, Korean society was under the antagonism between left-wing and right wing around the establishment of a new government and then the family was active in leftist movements. During the war, many Yoon family members were slaughtered in the name of the national security by the then Korean government. Since then, the famil's past careers have affected not only their lives since then but also the family's status in the community power structure. Under the strong anti-Communist ideology of Korea, the family was branded the Reds and the descendents of the family have suffered a great deal of damage by the guilt-by-association system and it brought about the ruin of the Yoon family. The family has a feeling of being victimized and has been still in the war between public memory and private memory.
