대나무 은유에 대한 체험주의적 해석

An Experientialist Interpretation on Bamboo Metaphors

이 글은 대나무[竹]의 다양한 은유를 체험주의적 관점에서 정리한 것이다. 즉 ‘상상력’과 ‘개념적 은유’라는 도구적 틀을 통해 대나무에 대한 우리의 사유와 체험, 그리고 사용은 어떤 것인가를 고찰함으로써 결국 대나무가 우리에게 의미하는 것이 무엇인지를 탐구한 것이다. 체험주의적 접근은 대나무의 개념체계가 주로 ‘도구로서의 대나무’와 ‘사람으로서의 대나무’라는 두 가지 개념적 은유에 기반을 둔 광범위한 은유 구조의 복합체로 이루어진 개념체계라는 사실을 보여준다. 한편, 상상력은 이러한 개념체계의 형성과 변형에 기여하는 은유적 사유의 인지적 근거를 이룸으로써 대나무의 개념체계에 가변성을 부여하는 역할을 하고 있다. 나아가 개념체계의 가변성이 의미하는 개념적 은유의 수정과 변경은 우리 삶의 형식의 변화에 대한 간접적인 증거라고 할 수 있다. 다시 말해 대나무의 개념체계에 포함된 독특한 은유들은 우리 삶의 형식이 갖는 독특성을 대변한다. 우리는 몇몇 개념적 은유의 통로를 통해 대나무를 이해하고 또 그런 방식을 통해 우리 삶의 구체적 형식을 드러내고 있는 것이다.

The main goal of this paper is to examine various metaphors for bamboo from an experientialist viewpoint. In other words, this aims at exploring that a bamboo has given us a certain meaning by considering our thought and experience about it and how to use it with instrumental methods of imagination and conceptual metaphors. We can see that our understanding a bamboo is a wide-ranging complex of metaphoric structures founded on conceptual metaphors of 'bamboo as instrument' and 'bamboo as man' according to an experientialist anaylsis. Imagination plays an important role in changing our undestanding of a bamboo by making cognitive basis on metaphoric thought that make contribution in forming and changing this conceptual system. Futhermore, it is an indirect proof to show change in the form of our life that the changeability of understanding stand for the revision and alteration of conceptual metaphor. Namely, unique metaphors comprising our understanding about bamboo represent more fundamental characteristics of our form of life. Ultimately, that we can make sense of a bamboo on the basis of various conceptual metaphors can also reveal a concrete form of life of ours according to this analysis.
