Goblin tales still provide readers with a world of fantasy, though the way of looking at a goblin called Doggaebi in Korean varies with the times. Goblin stories are so intriguing and tense that they could stimulate children to give full play to their own imagination without distinguishing reality from fantasy. Despite such value and educational effects of goblin tales, current textbooks just include an extremely small number of goblin tales, and the unique characteristics of goblin tales aren't even played up properly. An effort to shed light on the significance of goblin tales that make them differentiated from other sorts of tales to improve their educational applicability will produce better learning effects in the education sector. The purpose of this study was to examine the types, characteristics, hidden meaning and educational significance of goblin tales in an attempt to seek ways of taking advantage of goblin tales for an educational purpose. And it's also meant to analyze the goblin tales of the language arts textbooks of the 7th national elementary curriculum for every grade, to explore problems with the textbooks and to suggest workable reform measures. The educational value of goblin tales could be listed as below: First, goblin tales enable readers to build the right values, to discern right from wrong and ultimately to lead an ideal life. Second, goblin tales allow readers to learn lessons related to traditional virtues, to restore the unique Korean sentiment and to learn the wisdom and iron will of ancestors. Third, goblin tales offer an opportunity for readers to enter into a world of fantasy, to be free from reality with satisfaction, and to foster their imagination in search of new things. Fourth, goblin tales are satirical and humorous enough to let readers have a critical mind about society. In this study, how to make the good use of goblin tales was devised based on their above-mentioned educational value. The usefulness of goblin tales for building the right values and learning lessons related to traditional virtues was utilized to facilitate the internalization of the right values. Another useful feature of goblin tales, which was to offer a world of fantasy, was utilized to let readers maximize their imagination and creativity within the realm of possibility, and the satire and humor of goblin tales were used to have readers learn about critical satire and humor. As for the internalization of the right values, a goblin tale titled 'A Horsehair Goblin Cap with a Red Hole in It' was selected as a topic to be handled, and a sequential lesson plan was drawn up by using the tale according to a general literary teaching-learning model. The learning objective of it was to understand the personality of characters and to express one's own ideas about that. In terms of entering into a world of fantasy, a goblin tale entitled 'Proposing a Riddle to a Goblin' was selected as a topic, and a teaching plan was devised by using the tale based on the teaching-learning model geared toward creativity development. The learning objective was to imagine what would follow the given story. As the selected tale required crisis-handling skills, children would be able to boost their imagination and creativity in the course of discussing and seeking how to cope with crisis. Regarding the critical standpoint of goblin tales, a goblin tale titled 'Mr. Kim's Being Rich' was selected, and a lesson plan was prepared by utilizing the tale according to a response-centered learning model. The learning objective was to evaluate the behavior of characters. Although just a limited number of goblin tale topics was introduced, this study was meaningful in that it drew attention to the applicability of goblin tales as educational materials.
