Some researches suggest that spelling and 초등학생의 영어 스펠링 능력과 읽기 능력 87word recognition behaviors follow a different processing system while other researches report that both skills draw on the same knowledge base. After decades-long argumentation, researchers reached a consensus that early orthographic knowledge is essential to spelling skill acquisition, as well as word recognition. This study will investigate the relationship between spelling skills and the reading ability of children. To accomplish the purpose of the study, several tests were administered to 228 primary school graders. Students in the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school were tested with a spelling test and a reading test in March 2008, and an other reading test was administered to the same subjects nine months later. The collected data were analyzed using co-relation analysis and regression analysis. The analyzed data revealed that there was a strong relationship between reading ability and spelling skills, and that the spelling score could predict later reading ability to a great extent. Findings indicate that spelling skills had a significant influence on later reading ability and therefore, could be an important indicator of later reading ability. Based on the results, it is suggested that children should be supported with orthographic knowledge in the early reading stages and various teaching methods should be provided for spelling instruction.
