A study of the effects on English classes using the interactive whiteboard in elementary school

The purpose of this study is to find the effects of the interactional and interactive English classes in Elementary School using Promethen's Activboard, a kind of interactive whiteboard(IWB). First of all, this study found general characteristics and figures for English language learning about IWBs. On this basis, this study examined previous researches and constructed a teaching-learning model considering the characteristics of IWBs. Using this model, experimental classes utilizing the Activboard have been performed to learn the effects and to find better applications for the technology. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the experimental group scored higher than the control group in the emotional domains. This indicates that the English class using Activboard and its supplements was successful for students' emotional domains. Second, the experimental group's mean was much higher and its development was meaningful statistically in listening and speaking after performing interactional and interactive classes using the IWB. Third, the diagnosis of the students' starting points was possible by using Activote, a wireless response system in the IWB classroom. the English classes using the Activote changed students' levels desirably and positively. Fourth, this study observed and analyzed an English class using the IWB by the multimedia use and task concentration analysis. The results showed that the rate of using multimedia was raised and the rate of students' participation and time for listening and speaking was much more for the students through the task concentration analysis. Finally, this study conducted surveys and interviews to teachers and students to supplement the results qualitatively.
