The purpose of this study is to find out the causes of second language reading disorder through observing the development and changing process of Emily(assumed name) who exhibits signs of reading disorder in English and to use that as a basis to fine more effective ways of teaching for other children with the same problems. Emily's reading disorder has the symptoms of distortion and the replacement of letters in English and she has a difficulty of memorizing alphabet and words. These phenomena are caused by the defect of phonological short-term memory, the low proficiency of phonological awareness and serious concentration problems. The most effective strategy teaching Emily proved to be connecting English Alphabet sounds with those of Korean characters, and reading aloud on her own without the support of a teacher. These are different from the usual way of teaching of reading. The learners who have the same problems need their reading disorders diagnosed as soon as possible and receive appropriate treatment at an early stage. Therefore we need to develop our education system for those who have reading disorders and train teachers. Also, if we could observe the time of learning mother tongue, we can know that the problems comef rom the lerner or the language.
