이야기책 읽기를 통한 EFL 어린이 학습자의 쓰기 능력 발달에 관한 연구

A study on young EFL learners' writing development through storybook reading.

This study examines how young EFL children's writing develops through intensive storybook reading sessions. In this study, the children read and were read picture storybooks intensively, and then were asked to retell the stories in written modes. The children were led to restructure the original stories by adding their own thoughts and stories. The children's writing samples, collected over a six-month period, were analyzed qualitatively to determine the children's writing development and invented spelling use. The data analysis revealed that their written language skills developed in terms of the competence to convey their intended message to readers as well as textual competence, vocabulary, and spelling. All of the children have not only developed their spelling skills but also learned writing as communication through reading and retelling storybooks. The research findings suggest that young learners be exposed to real language use and be involved in real writing from the earlier stages to be a proficient writer.
