Lee Gwang Soo (1892~?) and Noh Shin (1881~1936) were representative modern Korean and Chinese authors and thinkers, each. The two people were common in having a studying abroad experience in Japan, and the period is also the same as it was around the mid~to~later 1900s. In this regard, comparing and reviewing their studying abroad experience as well as the formation of the experience foremost, based on their common points of studying abroad in Japan, becomes an important job in a discourse about modern eastern Asia. When conducting a comparative analysis of their study abroad experience and novels, focusing on their studying abroad and educational environments, interpersonal relationships, and its formation, as for Lee Gwang Soo, he reveals his experience and view of love along with humanitarianism and romanticism under the influence of Christianity and Tolstoi, whereas Noh Shin appeared to be directed to revolution, anti~feudality, and modern medicine with his tendency toward nationalism. When analyzing them from the perspective of tradition and modernity, Lee Gwang Soo was shown to aspire to free love and to create individual character on the basis of the Jeongnyuk theory(cultivation of emotion), along with a strong sense of resistance to early marriage. Meanwhile, Noh Shin clearly demonstrated a critical spirit in his works against Chinese tradition, represented as Chinese queue, and strong anti~feudal spirit describing Chinese history as the history of cannibalism, figuratively. Both the authors, Noh Shin and Lee Gwang Soo, aimed to advance in literature during their studying abroad, and they wanted to become literary men dedicated to their peoples through literature. The need for research into the common destiny and the situation of the times of the two people, who were representative intellectuals and literary men in modern Korean and China, respectively, is again being made evident.
