This thesis will attempt to reconstruct a scene where science and culture intersect in two authors’ works through the representation of science (scientists) in Kwangsoo Lee and Lu Xun’s books. In the modern East Asia, science is not known not as technical and professional knowledge, but rather viewed as modern and enlightening, affecting the construction of modern literature. Lu Xun’s《A Madman’s Diary》and《Well Wishes》 and Kwangsoo Lee’s《Pioneer》successfully portray the representation of science (scientists) through modern subjects and the relationship of women. Firstly, in《A Madman’s Diary》, scienceis portrayed as a medical sentiment that attempts to dissect Chinese history. However, the one-sidedness of this kind of sentiment raises doubts about the subjects of that support this sentiment. This portrayal is fully disclosed in《Well Wishes》, completely reversing the situations of the modernistic character narrater and the female character. This reversal shows Lu Xun’s point of view about "what is really Chinese." On the other hand, in Kwangsoo Lee’s works, science is portrayed more like a literature. The main character of《Pioneer》, a chemist, tries to materialize the ideals of creation during the colonial Chosun period with a similar passion of an artist, but due to the failure of one experiment, he faces a subjectivity crisis. This crisis is solved by the appearance of a repenting woman. The solution –appearance of the woman – shows gender subjectivity of Korean Modern Literature, led by Kwangsoo Lee. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether this point of view can be applied to all of Kwangsoo Lee and Lu Xun’s works.
