The origine of education for tea boys dates back to the hwarang of Shilla. Yi Duck-mu(1741~93) of Chosun also stressed the need of education for tea boys as follows: "Those who serve their parents in reverence should be attentive enough to tell the precise timing of water and fire in making tea and herb medicine." It was a right saying, indeed. The rule of teaism which stresses the precise timing of water, fire and wind as the nucleus of the discipline must be linked to the principle of Oriental politics as regards "forest conservancy and the control of water." Therefore, in case a tea boy passed the state examination and was appoint-ed to a post in the government, it was institutionalized that he should start his government service in the tea office.
