A Study on the Tea Tao of Sung Sol Kim Jung He

The way of tea characteristic which kim Jung He(1786-1856) who was an mineralogist and practical scientist relealized is studied. The cake tea, the lump tea, the leaf tea mentioned in his library catalog and prose and poetry were something that he drunk. A verse, "Occasionally I send my slave to garden and grind leaf tea", in a pine and stone garden poem, recited by Lee Sang Jung(1810-1881), is the first historical materials on the point which steamed leaf tea was grund from a hand mill. There were the stone furnace, brazier, tea pot in the tea utensils which he used. He said that water of Mt. Kwanack and Quelpart Island was not only suitable to make tea, water of the Han river was same as the Yangtse river and the other spring entitled “Heae Chon” of Mt. Inwang was same as spring of Mt. Heae, in China. Furthermore, he replaced the traditional heavy water superiority doctrin with the light water superiority doctrine and claimed the latter one. He had a acustom which he got a tea boy carry a tea bowl whenever he makes a famouse tea. And there were bottled flower, potted flower, garden flower (daffodil, orchid, plum-blossoms) in his flowers for tea. Investigation shows that he had 460 signatures approximatly and 9 kinds of pseudonym relating tea and 3 kinds of tea house. And his philosophy of tea tao was Tea and Dhyana was of the same taste. The source of the following tea poem, recited by him, was verified, but the succeeding study may be required to construe the right meaning of that. Sitting at a place where tea is the height, but aroma is same as the biginning, (靜坐處茶半香初) Water flows and flower is blossomed when I use curiously (妙用時水流花開) Besides, an investigation on remains related to the tea which are collected in some individual and public museums is needed.
