Six categories of tea are produced in China, among which green tea amounts for 74 percent, and the production of famous teas and Oolong tea are increasing while black tea declining. The tea production in China has been fast developed in the last 50 years and it was mainly benefited from the reform of planting density, the popularization of new tea cultivars and the manuring techinque. Organic tea farming has been started in China since early 1990's and it is growing well. There have been six stages in the development of tea breeding in China, i.e. the non-organized stage. clonal tea breeding stage, yield breeding stage, quality breeding stage, resistance breeding stage and molecular breeding stage. The major problems in Chinese tea industry are low yield per unit area, high production cost and low ratio of clonal tea cultivar field. Intensive management and sustainable production techniques will be applied to solve the problems.
