‘魏代 文學 自覺說’ 고찰

본 논문은 중국문학비평사의 한 획을 그은 일본의 한학자 스즈키 토라오(鈴木虎雄)의 ‘魏代 文學 自覺說’을 고찰하고자 하였다. 1920년 스즈키 토라오는 魏代를 중국 문학의 자각 시점으로 간주하는 획기적인 평가를 시도하였는데, 그의 이러한 평가는 중국 문학의 역사적 발전 양상에 대한 새로운 인식의 지평을 여는 초유의 식견으로 평가되어왔다. 이후 근 한 세기 가까운 동안 ‘위대 문학 자각설’은 중국 고전문학과 문학비평 연구의 기본적 개념으로 평가 받아왔다. 그의 ‘위대 문학 자각설’이 20세기 중국 문학의 각종 연구 분야에서 차지하였던 지대한 비중과 영향력은 중국 문학사와 비평사 전 과정을 망라하여도 쉽게 찾아 보기 어려울 정도의 중요한 역사적 가치를 지니고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 스즈키 토라오의 ‘위대 문학 자각설’이 지니는 이러한 중요성에 비해, 그 이론에 대한 심층적 고찰과 객관적 타당성에 대한 학계의 연구 성과는 만족할만한 수준이라 하기 어렵다. 본 논문은 스즈키 토라오가 제기한 ‘위대 문학 자각설’에 대한 면밀한 검토를 통하여, 그의 견해가 중국 문학의 실제 발전 양상과 부합하는 것이었는가에 대한 타당성 을 검토하고자 하였으며, 아울러 이 이론이 지니는 역사적 의미와 가치는 물론 그 한계에 대해서도 재평가하고자 하였다. 스즈키 토라오는 ‘위대 문학 자각설’의 근거로 문학 평론의 성행, 문학의 지위와 가치에 대한 새로운 인식, 문체론의 확립, 文氣說의 독창적 제기 등 4개 지표를 제시하였다. 본 논문은 스즈키 토라오가 제기한‘위대 문학 자각설’의 4개 지표의 타당성을 심층 고찰하는 방식으로 진행되었다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 스즈키 토라오가 제시한 문학 자각의 4개 지표는 비록 부분적으로 일부 문제점이 발견되기는 하였지만, 전반적으로는 충분한 논리적 타당성을 지니고 있는 것으로 검증되었다. 따라서 본 논문은 스즈키 토라오의 ‘위대 문학 자각설’이 중국문학비평연구의 획기적 발전을 가져온 통찰력 있는 식견으로 평가 받아야 한다는 결론에 이르게 되었다.

This thesis is to study on the ‘Theory of Literature Awakening in the Wei Dynasty’ developed by a Japanese scholar, Suzuki Torao, who made a new era for criticism of Chinese literature. In 1920, Suzuki Torao took a historical challenge in defining the Wei Dynasty as an awakening period of Chinese literature, and such challenge has been recognized through history as the first insight that opened up horizons in seeing a new meaning of historical development of Chinese literature. ‘Theory of Literature Awakening in the Wei Dynasty’ has thus been recognized as a basic concept for the Chinese classical literature and the literature criticism for nearly the last one century. It is justifiable that the significance and influence the ‘Theory of Literature Awakening in the Wei Dynasty’ had in various research areas of Chinese literature of the 20th century retain distinctively high value in the history of Chinese literature and criticism. Despite such significance of the theory, it is, however, difficult to say that the current level of academic achievement in-depth analysis and the objective validity of the theory is sufficiently high. This thesis is to examine, through a close review on the ‘Theory of Literature Awakening in the Wei Dynasty,’ whether it is valid to determine that the insight of Suzuki Torao has been consistent with the actual aspect of Chinese literature development, and is to re-evaluate the historical significance and value as well as its negative aspects. Based on his theory, Suzuki Torao suggested four indexes including prevalence of literature criticism, new awareness on status and value of literature, establishment of Wenqi Theory, and exclusive suggestion of Wenqi Theory by which this thesis develops into it in-depth analysis. According to the relevant research, although the four indexes suggested by Suzuki Torao partially have the issues for further controversy, it is verified that the theory has a sufficient level of logical validity in general. Therefore, this thesis reached a conclusion that the ‘Theory of Awakening Literature in the Wei Dynasty’ suggested by Suzuki Torao should thus be recognized as an insight that has brought milestone in the criticism of Chinese literature.
