An Empirical Study on the Impact of the mutual recognition of national measurement standards on Korean Trade

Although it is known that technical barriers to trade critically and extensively influence trade flows, there is little empirical study about their impacts. This is mainly because it is difficult to obtain quantified data of standards, technical regulations and conformity assessment which consist of three pillars of WTO/TBT Agreement. In this study, an empirical model was specified on the basis of gravity theory with a proxy variable of the key comparison(KC) which is an important activity for obtaining the equivalence of national measurement standards in international metrology community. With the specified equation, the regression analysis was used to find out whether or not the KC activity in measurement science impacts on Korean trade. The results indicate that the number of KC has a positive impact on bilateral trade of Korea with its trading partner.
