A Study on the Problems of In-land Transport Modes in China

China has become a global manufacturing center with its high economic growth rate at a 10 % per year. Since its economic reform and opening up in 1978, China's economy keeps booming. After China joined the WTO in December 2001, many multinational enterprises have entered the market to take advantage of big market potential and China has become a black hole of foreign investment in the world. Rail was the main form of transportation under the old communist model, but it has not adapted to the new Chinese economy. And the development of pan-China road services is limited by the many internal barriers to movement imposed by local governments and the regional protectionism. China is concentrating its inland wanter transport development thrust on 5 specific areas, that is, Yangtze River, Pearl River, Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Yanngtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta. And China has developed the hardwares of air transport and related facilities for accommodate the increasing demand of heavy cargo traffics. The purpose of this paper contributes to activate the in-land logistics in China by studying the problems and solutions of the modes of logistics in China such as road, rail, inland waterway and air.
