Quality Control Chart has long history in US industry and been used in various manufacturing area. Both univariate and multivariate control chart have been introduced and improved. However, as a batch process has become a popular production line in industries, demand for a proper statistical process control method has been increased. The Squared Prediction Error (SPE) control chart based on Multi-way Principal Component Analysis (MPCA) is introduced by Nomiko and McGregor (1994, 1995) for monitoring a batch process and the control chart has been evaluated. This study reviewed conventional SPC tools and reviewed detail procedures of conducting MPCA, building SPE chart, and discussed about weakness of applying MPCA for monitoring a batch process.
