This essay aims to explore how teaching American novel to graduate students can be conducted effectively and discuss important issues related to this teaching. It ultimately tries to illustrate the methodology of teaching American novel in graduate school. For this purpose, I examine several texts and methodologies I have used in my American novel class. Especially this article tries to interrogate the directions of the class and several issues teachers might face while teaching American novel in graduate school. This article emphasizes the careful selection of texts according to the level of graduate schools and presents the methodology in choosing the texts. I also investigate how professors prepare the class and lead the presentations and discussions, presenting specific critical methodologies. In discussing Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, I also demonstrate how teachers can use films to advance the level of class discussion. This article ultimately tries to suggest the direction and methodology of teaching American novel in graduate schools to encourage graduate students to become good scholars.
