Wallace Stevens believes that the single most distinctive feature of reality is the recognition that all propositions about reality disappear in an actual world. In this respect, Stevens does not see poetry as an imitation but as a creative force, because everything can be turned into a newly imagined reality in the poet's mind no matter what it is. Reality in actual life transformed by the poet's imagination has various imagery in accordance with the change of time and place, which contains not a permanent but a temporary reality. In that his poetry reflects his philosophy similar to that of Husserl and Heidegger, the phenomenological approach to Steven's poetry seems to be a feasible one. This study undertakes a comparison of the phenomenological ideas and Stevens' use of those ideas in his poems and thereby demonstrates keen affinities between them.
