The purpose of this paper is to shed light on generic distinctions between two types of tour guide texts by analyzing the use of Appraisal (linguistic evaluations) within the framework of systemic functional linguistics. The two types of texts commonly feature Seattle as their subject, but their publishers are different, which gives them different communicative purposes. One, published by the city’s tourism authority, is promotional in nature as it seeks to persuade the reader into having interest in, and considering a visit to, the city. By contrast, the other one, published by an independent publisher, is essentially informative as it is oriented toward providing readers with useful information to assist their visits. The paper analyze show these divergences in communicative purpose are reflected in, and served by, variation in the way different Appraisal resources are chosen and deployed in text. Most notably, the official guide overwhelms the independent one in frequency of appraisals. In addition, appraisal is positive in all instances and often intensified to ramp up the positivity of evaluation. By contrast, the independent guide was amenable to negative appraisal and displayed relative reservations about using intensified appraisals.
