본 논문은 최근 주목받고 있으나 검증이 미흡한 R&D 효율성과 관련하여 실증적으로 분석하고자 한다. 즉 제한된 R&D자원 내에서 효율성을 높일 수 있는 방안을 찾고자 한다. 이를 위해 중소기업을 대상으로 기업 특성(부서간 협력, 외부네트워크)과 R&D 효율성 간 관계 및 R&D 효율성과 수익성 간 관계를 실증적으로 규명하였다. 149개 중소기업으로부터 설문자료를 수집·분석한 결과, 부서간 협력과 외부네트워크 모두 R&D 효율성에 긍정적으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 또한 R&D 효율성이 수익성(매출액순이익률)에 미치는 영향도 긍정적으로 유의하였다. 이는 내부의 부서간 협력과 외부의 네트워크를 통해 R&D 효율성 향상을 달성한다면 보다 높은 수익을 기대할 수 있음을 시사한다. 이 결과는 자원 부족으로 많은 어려움을 겪고 있는 중소기업이 보다 효율적인 R&D활동을 하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

This study aims at investigating the determinants of R&D efficiency empirically in Manufacturing SMEs. This study suggests that cross functional cooperation and external network have significant effects on R&D efficiency, and that R&D efficiency has significant effect on firm profitability. To test the hypotheses, data were collected from manufacturing SMEs. The survey data of 149 firms were collected and integrated as the empirical base for testing the hypotheses. Major results are as follows: Firstly, cross functional cooperation and external network had significant and positive effects on R&D efficiency. This result implies that cross functional cooperation and external network are an important means by which manufacturing SMEs can promote R&D efficiency. Secondly, R&D efficiency had significant and positive effect on firm profitability. This result implies that R&D efficiency guarantees the higher financial performance.
