Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach has been widely accepted in current second language classrooms. One of the key elements of CLT is its emphasis on interactions in the classroom for the communicative use of the target language. Though it is often assumed that the CLT approach is being practiced in the classroom, it is not clear what features of classroom interaction make the class communicative. The study thus attempted to describe teachers' perceptions of CLT and the characteristics of classroom interactions in an EFL context. For the purpose, six English conversation classes by native teachers were observed and analyzed from classroom discourse perspective. The results showed that the interactions in the classroom were mostly limited to drill-like short question-answers despite the emphasis of group work. The participation of the students seemed to be influenced by their comfortableness in class and the amount of teacher talk. The results suggest that proper attention should be paid to the learners' need in the EFL context and that teachers need to be encouraged to reflect on their implementation of CLT in a given context.
