본 연구의 목적은 지원고용 및 직업환경에서 태동되고 진전된 자연적 지원(natural supports)을 통합교육 맥락에서 개념화하고 적용하는 것과 관련된 쟁점과 제언을 지적하고 우리나라 통합교육 환경에서 자연적 지원 개념과 적용에 관련된 시사점을 제안하는 것이다. 분석대상 논문은 10가지 국제 학술지에 지난 20년(1988년부터 2007년)사이에 출판된 자연적 지원 관련 논문 총 26편이었다. 자연적 지원의 개념화 관련 논문들은 13편으로 논문들의 전체 내용의 개요가 정리되었으며 그 논문들에서 다룬 내용에서 8가지 주제들을 추출하였다. 자연적 지원의 적용관련 논문들은 16편으로 사용된 연구방법별(조사연구, 사례연구, 단일대상연구, 및 문헌연구)로 정리되었으며 자연적 지원의 적용 결과는 직업환경에서 장애인근로자의 직업적응과 사회적 통합에 긍정적 성과를 초래한 것으로 보고되었다. 자연적 지원의 정의를 제시한 논문은 15편으로 대부분 정의들에 내포된 공통 요소들을 추출하였고 정의가 시기적으로 진전되는 양상에서 4가지 경향성을 도출해 내었다. 결론에서 직업환경이 아닌 통합교육 환경에서 자연적 지원의 개념화와 적용과 관련된 쟁점들을 지적하였고, 우리나라 통합교육의 질적 향상을 위해 자연적 지원이 기여할 수 있는 점들을 추출하여 논의와 제언을 제공하였다. 자연적 지원은 통합교육 맥락에서 장애학생을 최적합하게 지원하는 것은 어떤 것이어야 하는지에 대한 관점과 방향성을 제시하는 잠재력이 있다. 통합학교 맥락에서 다양한 구성원에 의해 장애학생에게 제공될 자연적 지원 전략의 개발과 활용에 대한 후속연구의 필요성을 제기하였다.
The purpose of this study was to point out issues and suggestions related to conceptualizing and applying natural supports, which were evolved in the area of supported employment, and to propose some issues and suggestions for the use of natural supports in the contexts of inclusive schools in Korea. We analyzed the total of 26 articles published in 10 different peer-reviewed international journals, which were selected from the articles published from 1988 to 2007. We derived 8 different themes from 13 articles which addressed the related issues to conceptualizing natural supports. We analyzed the major content of 16 articles reporting the results of application of natural supports according to the research method used in the articles: survey research, case study, single subject study, and literature review. The main outcomes of natural supports included that natural supports increased the level of job performance of employees with disabilities and social inclusion among employees with and without disabilities in integrated job settings. Based on the review of 15 articles which proposed the definitions of natural supports, we figured out some common elements in the most of definitions and generated 4 tendencies in defining natural supports for last 20 years. In conclusion, we identified the issues that associated with the conceptualization and application of natural supports in the context of inclusive schools. Finally, we pointed out the potential of contributions of the natural supports to enhancing the quality of inclusive education in Korea and suggested futrure research needs and research agenda.
