Effects of Mother's Self-Differentiation and Marital Adjustment on Young Children's Problem Behavior

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of mother's self differentiation and marital adjustment on children's problem behavior. Subjects of this study consisted of 402 mothers having 3 to 5-year-old young children drawn from 6 kindergartens located in Cheongju city. The pilot study was conducted to examine the applicability of survey instrument. Data were analyzed by using SPSSWIN 12.0 program with the methods of t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe post-hoc test, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis. The results of the study were as follows: First, there were differences in mother's self-differentiation that consisted of emotional/cognitive function, family projection, emotional disconnection, family regression, triangle of the family of origin, and triangle of the current family according to some socio-demographic variab les. Second, differences in mother's marital adjustment including marital consistency, satisfaction, and bond were found depending on socio-demographic variables. Third, children's problem behaviors, including aggression, depression /anxiety, withdrawal, and attention-deficit, were different according to socio-dernographic variables. Fourth, children's aggression was predicted by mothers' self-differentiation. Fifth, children's depression and anxiety were explained by mothers' self-differentiation. Sixth, children's withdrawal was affected by mothers' self-differentiation. Seventh, children's attention-deficit was predicted by mother's self-differentiation.
