Effects of Dating Characteristics, Attachment Style, & Quality of Relationship on Dating Violence of College Student

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dating characteristics, attachment style and quality of relationship on dating violence of college students those who were in physical and psychological violence and abused relationship. It also is to search for plan to prevent that convert to marital violence from dating violence. By doing so, it was intended not only to help clearly understand factors predicting dating violence of college students, but also to provide the primary source and for dating education and counseling for college students. Subject of this study consisted of 440 college students(female: 239, male:201 students) who has been dating drawn from Chungbuk province. The pilot study was used to examine the applicability of survey instrument. Data were analyzed by the method of frequency, percentage, Cronbach α, factor analysis, t-test, F-test, Tukey post-hoc test, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression using SPSS 12.0 program. The results of this study were as follow: First, the experience of physical violence victim among college students was affected by sex, the importance of dating, avoidance and anxiety attachment style, commitment and satisfaction to their dating partner. Second, the experience of psychological violence victim among college students was affected by sex, duration of dating period, the importance of dating, avoidance attachment style, conflict and satisfaction to their dating partner. Third, the experience of physical abuser among college students was affected by sex, importance of dating, anxiety attachment style and satisfaction to their dating partner. Fourth, the experience of psychological abuser among college students was affected by sex, age, duration of dating, sexual intercourse, the importance of dating, anxiety attachment style, commitment, conflict, and satisfaction to their dating partner. In conclusion, attachment style was the strongest factor to predict the dating violence physically and psychologically whether abusers or victims.
