The Characteristics of Trend and Addictive Inclination in Mobile Phone Use among Adolescents

The purpose of this study was to find the trend and addictive inclination in mobile phone use among adolescents. And 545 middle school students and 551 high school students living in Daejon(big-sized city), Cheongju(middle-sized city), Okchon(rural area). were selected and the questionnaire was conducted during March 22 to April 9, 2004. Major findings were as follows: 1) The most important motive of mobile phone use among adolescents was found to be 'since peer group have their own mobile phone', whereas practical motive such as 'easy contact with business' among adults. 2) Thirty-nine percent of respondents spent 2∼30 thousand Won per month, showing highest ratio. Mostly respondents' parents pay phone bill for their children. and 14.4% of respondents experienced not paying the phone bill until dead line. 3) The respondents thought that mobile phone has some positive functions such as tighten the friendship, getting away from stress, loneliness, and feelings of alienation, eash contact, and sharing lots of informations with friends. Especially, the fact mobile phone is used as a tool of tightening the friendship is very different from adults. Whereas, the respondents thought that mobile phone has some negative functions. 4) As a whole of respondents, the average level of addictive mobile phone use showed a little lower than 3(mid point in 5 likert scale). The group of 'addictive use' showed average 3.1, and furthermore 3.9 in disturbing daily living part. 5) Among respondents, the group showing 'addictive use' in mobile phone use was more likely to be lower self-esteem and high blue devils than their counter parts. This results implied that psychological problem could cause overuse mobile phone among adolescents.
