The purpose of this paper is to examine inmates' relationships with fellow inmates and prison guards from the theoretical competition between prisonization and social control theory. It also accesses inmates' participation in the treatment programs. The overall research findings using data collected from 359 inmates incarcerated in six prisons located in the Republic of Korea support claims of social control theory, while claims of prisonization are not empirically supported. Specifically, the ordinal logistic regression analysis reveals inmates' attachment to peer has statistically significant effect on all 3 dependent variables. Inmates' attachment to parent has a significant effect only on relationships with fellow inmates. On the other hand, all the 3 factors of prisonization has no effect on inmates' relationships with fellow inmates and prison guards. Only one(disapproval of criminal justice validity) of the 3 prisonization factors has a significant effect on inmate's participation in the prison programs. Overall, the amounts and consistency of empirical support for the social control theory far outweigh those for prisonization theory. Theoretical and practical implications of research findings are also discussed.
