우리 고소설사에서 볼 때, 20세기에 들어 국문 활자본으로 간행, 유통된 <원두표실기>는 <홍장군전>, <한씨보응록>과 함께 <수호지>와의 영향관계를 살필 수 있는 아주 드문 사례라고 할 수 있다. 이에 필자는 <원두표실기>에 대한 본격적인 작품론의 일환으로 작품의 형성 과정과 소설사적 의의에 대해서 살펴보았다. 역사적 사실과 설화적 전승을 통해 실존인물 원두표는 위엄 있는 풍채에 뜻이 크고 강직하여 스스로 호걸임을 자부하였고, 또한 武才까지 갖춘 인물로 알려져 있는 바, 이 같은 사실로 인해 <홍장군전>의 독서과정에서 자연스럽게 홍윤성에 연결될 수 있었으며, 이를 機緣으로 하여 <원두표실기>가 성립되었다고 보았다. 그리하여 <원두표실기>가 외형상 실존인물 원두표의 실제 행적에 대한 사실 기록을 표방하고 있으나, 기실 사실의 수용은 서두부와 결말부를 통해 극히 단편적, 피상적으로 이루어지는 데서 그쳤으며, 사건 전개의 대부분을 선행 작품인 <홍장군전>을 모방, 답습하는 것으로 처리하였다. 그리고 서두부와 결말부도 세부적인 내용은 설화적 전승을 적극적으로 수용한 것으로서 실존인물에 관한 한 설화의 소설화에 다름이 없다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 이 같은 창작 방법과 관련하여, <원두표실기>는 <수호지>와의 영향 관계를 살필 수 있는 극히 드문 事例일 뿐더러, 민족사적 입장에서 義勇無雙한 인물의 형상화를 통해 不義한 外勢의 지배와 억압을 극복하고자 했던 데서 소설사적으로 중요한 의의를 지닌다고 하였다.
The purpose of this study is to research the creative writing method and the import of novel history of <One Dupyo silgi(원두표실기)>. In our korean old classical fiction history, <One Dupyo silgi(원두표실기)> came into being from the effect of <Hong Changgun jeon(홍장군전)> which initated or followed <Taho Musong(타호무송)>, <One Dupyo silgi(원두표실기)> was lined up the first half part, so to speak, a hero One Dupyo(원두표)' activities as a jolly fellow and the latter half part, so to speak, One Dupyo' rising in the world and gaining fame. The first half part of work was built up from effect of <Hong Changgun jeon(홍장군전)> and the latter half part was built up in the process of accommodation the historical facts partially and gathering a legendary literature positively. Concerning the historical import of <One Dupyo silgi(원두표실기)>, I discussed in two points of view. in the first place, because that is one of a few works which are considered the effects of <Suho chi(수호지)>, and at the same time it aims subjugation the control and suppression of an immoral external circumstances, <One Dupyo silgi(원두표실기)> holds an important meaning in our korean old classical fiction history.
