Visual auity screening test was performed for 10,272 young adults(between 19~24 years old) who domiciled in Seoul area(1984) and then 4,105 with VA less than 0.7 were examined and analyzed on status of glasses wearing, refractive status and other ocular diseases. The result were as follows: 1. The number of visually impaired among the 10,272 young adults in Seoul accounted 4,105(40%), and the most prevalent cause was myopia, 39.1%. 2. Refractive errors consisted of 66.7% of myopia, 1.3% of hyperopia and the anisometropia occupied 2.0%. 3. There was a definite tendency of increased degrree of myopia with higher educated group up to high myopia(-7.0D), (p 0.00). 4. More cases of correction with spectacles was marked among higher educated group(p 0.001). 5. Myopic degenerative fundus change were more significantly observed in high myopia(over -0.5D, p 0.001). 6. Among the causes of visual impairments other than the refractive errors(2.0%), the most predominant one was trauma(30.5%).
