부르디외의 문화재생산이론을 통해 본 한국 학교 미술교육의 제도적 관행

Critical Reflection on the Institutional Practices of Korean School Art Education through Bourdieu’s Theory of Cultural Reproduction

피에르 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu, 1977, 1984/2005, 1992, 1993)는 포괄적인 삶의 방식의 총체인 일상생활의 내면화된 의식과 가치체계로서 문화에 관심을 집중하면서 다양한 문화적 취향이 생산되고 배제되는 사회 계층 간의 제도적 불평등 구조의 원인을 프랑스의 고등교육제도의 관행 속에서 파헤치고자 한 교육사회학자이다. 그는 문화적 취향과 안목은 역사적 산물이며, 특정한 장(場)에서의 아비투스(habitus)를 통해 문화자본이 생성되고 학교와 같은 제도적 이데올로기 기구를 통해 기존에 사회적 권력을 쥐고 있는 특정 계층의 문화가 지속적으로 재생산된다고 주장한다. 그의 문화재생산이론을 통해 학교라는 제도적 교육 장치 속에서 미술을 가르치고 배운다는 것은 그 제도를 만들어내는 사회구성원의 특정한 기질과 성향 속에서 이루어지는 문화적 관행의 하나로 간주할 수 있다. 그러므로 이 연구는 한국 학교교육의 제도적 맥락 안에서 미술이라는 교과가 어떤 기능을 해왔으며, 이를 통해 어떻게 이데올로기의 내면화로서 문화재생산 기능을 해왔는가를 부르디외의 문화재생산 이론을 통해 비판적으로 고찰한다. 한국 근대화 과정의 역사 속에서 이루어진 제도적 미술교육의 관행에 대한 반성적 고찰은 근대화 이후 빠른 경제 성장과 급변하는 한국의 특수한 자본주의 사회제도 속에서 다양성과 차이를 존중하는 평등한 사회 실현을 위해 학교 미술교육이 어떻게 나아가야 하는가에 대한 통찰을 제공한다.

School art education in the institutional context can be considered as cultural practices producing people’s dispositions and attitudes. Pierre Bourdieu(1977, 1984/2005, 1992, 1993) argues that cultural attitudes and dispositions are historically produced by institutional ideological apparatuses such as school education. This study critically exams the institutional practices of Korean school art education in the light of Bourdieu’s theory of cultural reproduction. This provides critical insights to the function of the Korean institutional art education constructed within the political, economic and cultural context of the process of Korean modernization. The reflective insights to the institutional practices of Korean school art education as a means of political ideologies implicate the notion of politics of inclusion and exclusion in the practices reforming the National Curriculum for Art and their effects on constructing cultural identity. It can also be an opportunity of exam how Korean school art education can contribute to constructing cultural identity toward equality, diversity and differences of culture.
