학제연구의 목적과 방법에 대한 비판적 검토

Critical Examination on the purposes and the methodological issues of interdisciplinary research

본 연구는 최근 국내외에서 강조되고 있는 학제연구의 목적과 방법을 비판적으로 분석한 것이다. 논의 과정을 통해, 분과학문의 체계는 인식론적 실체이면서 동시에, 시대상황의 변화 및 요구와 긴밀하게 연계되어 이루어지는 사회적 실체임을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 각 분과학문은 그 학문만의 고유한 가치가 있지만, 그것이 곧 배타적인 연구를 정당화하는 것은 아니며, 오히려 각 분과학문 간의 의미있는 상호교류를 통해 개별 학문적 접근만으로는 얻을 수 없는 새로운 시너지 효과를 얻게 된다는 점이 논의되었다. 학제연구가 지닌 목적은 첫째, 학문적 발전, 둘째, 새로운 영역 발견을 통한 부가가치의 창출, 그리고 셋째, 복합적 실생활사태의 문제해결 등으로 나누어 볼 수 있었으며, 어떤 목적을 중심으로 한 학제연구인가에 따라 구현할 수 있는 방법론이 달라질 것임이 강조되었다. 한편, 최근의 국내외 학제연구의 동향과 그 사례를 분석하였는데, 대학이 지닌 여러 가지 구조적 한계에도 불구하고 전공 및 학과 조직과 교육과정 등을 상당히 적극적이고 진취적인 방식으로 재구조화하는 시도들을 확인하였다. 끝으로 앞서의 논의를 토대로, 통합의 주체, 시기와 비중의 문제, 그리고 제도적 개입의 문제 등을 중심으로 학제연구를 시행하는 방법과 관련한 이슈들을 탐색하였다.

This study attempts to explore the purposes and the methodological issues of interdisciplinary research. During the last few years the number of references to interdisciplinarity in the educational literature has increased in a startling fashion. An interdisciplinary research is a field of study that crosses traditional boundaries between academic disciplines, as new needs and professions have emerged. Interdisciplinary approach has been regarded as an alternative which can supplement the shortcomings of discipline-based teaching. In this study, the main purposes of interdisciplinary research can be identified as follows. ⅰ) The growth of academic knowledge, ⅱ) creation of social or economical benefits, and ⅲ) understanding and solving many complex or practical problems by pulling together insights and methodologies from a variety of disciplines. Well-designed interdisciplinary studies expose researchers to related patterns of experience, leading them toward a more sophisticated comprehensive view of the world. In spite of those rewards of interdisciplinary approach, at times, interdisciplinary perspectives may prove a handicap. Indiscriminate attempts to apply one discipline to others have often had unsavory consequences. In this present study, the methodological issues such as the focus of integration (intra or inter-persons), sequence and relations (between disciplinary approach and interdisciplinary approach), and institutional barriers were discussed. Taken together, these rewards, drawbacks, and barriers suggest a mild shift in the contemporary world of learning towards interdisciplinary knowledge and research.
