A Study of Fruits’ Names in Arabic

The purpose of this paper is to study fruits’ names in Arabic focusing on comparison between Literary and Colloquial Arabic. Firstly phonological and morphological points such as collective noun and noun of individuality, phonological processes from Literary Arabic into Colloquial Arabic are examined. And the notable 27 fruit names that are widespread in the Arab world are explained. So the following are found : (1) Generally each widespread fruit has one Arabic name. (2) Some outstanding fruits such as orange, pear, peach and plum have diverse names according to regions. (3) Some Arabic names of fruits (i.e. xawx) stand for different fruits (i.e. peach and plum).
