Sineungyangjindan gamibang (SYDG) is composed of several plant extracts used in oriental medicine. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of SYDG on hair growth in a shaving animal model of C57BL/6 mice. Six-week-old male mice were divided into three groups including negative control group (saline), positive control group (finasteride, FINA) and experimental group (SYDG) and they were administered orally with experimental materials of 0.3 ml/once/day for 8 weeks. SYDG evidently promoted hair growth grossly and SYDG promoted hair growth faster than FINA. Serum testosterone (T) level was significantly lower in FINA group (p<0.05) and serum dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels were significantly lower in FINA and SYDG groups (p<0.01) compared with the negative control group. The ratios of DHT/T were also significantly lower in FINA and SYDG groups (p<0.05) compared with the negative control group. Absolute and relative weight of prostate were significantly lower in FINA and SYDG groups compared with the negative control group (p<0.05). These results indicated that the oral administration of SYDG promoted hair growth probably due to the same mechanism lowering serum DHT level as finasteride.
