구석기시대 인지능력 변화에 대한 고고학적 고찰

An Archaeological View to Evolutionary Hominid Cognition

본고에서는 인류행위의 기저부에 위치한 인지능력의 문제를 고고학 연구영역으로 끌어들이기 위한 제반문제의 진단과 그 해결을 제시한다. 이를 위해서, 그간 제시되어온 화석학적 진단과 아울러서 모듈이론에 의한 인지능력 변화성을 조사하여야 된다. 그리고 이를 비교·고찰하기 위해서 영장류 연구 또한 병행할 필요가 있다. 고고학 영역과 직·간접적으로 연계된 이러한 연구방법을 통해서 본 인지적 연구가 가능해 지리라 본다. 화석학적으로 밝혀진 인지관련 신체부위의 진화시점을 파악함으로서 인지변화의 모자이크적 설명이 가능하다. 또한 특수목적장치로서 표현되는 모듈성의 존재와 이를 통한 인지능력의 변화를 진화적인 시각에서 바라봄으로서 호미니드 사이의 연관성과 변화성의 파악이 보다 용이해진다. 진화적 시각을 통해 마련된 인지이론은 인지변화의 주체인 인류의 여러 행위증거를 통해서 검증이 시도된다. 석기유물의 형식, 상징화된 유물, 이동거리, 집단크기, 유물복합도 등 여러 고고학적 증거는 패턴인지, 이산조합체계능력, 계획적 사고, 사회적 인지능력, 인지능력의 선천성과 후천성 등 여러 영역들과 유기적 관계를 가진다. 본고에서는 인지능력의 근본요소들이 특정시기동안 단기간에 이루어짐을 지양하며, 평형을 이루며 단계적으로 변화됨을 밝히고자 한다. 아울러서 문화복합도와 근본적인 인지변화사이의 시간적 불일치성에 대한 설명을 시도하고자 한다.

This paper discusses implications for the modularity of hominid cognition. This approach would give more possibilities in producing a firm relationship between artefacts and cognition, and offer more knowledges about the origin of Modern human. Various forms of these data geberate plausible interpretations for hominid cognition. Same as physical parts, the cognitive abilities are also lying in an evolutionary ecological framework. In consequence, they have been used, transmitted and altered throughput hominids history. All the cognitive parts have been processed at each different period of time. Therefore, related archaeological data which are the results of their cognitive behaviors should be viewed not as a whole but as separated sets of cognitive developments. This mosaic evolution offers that no single aspect explains a whole cognitive transition at all, so holistic view is highly necessary. Updated data make us finding a particular phase of mental and cultural outbreak. It would allow to define when and how the transition had been occurred. Refined hunting strategies, long-distance travelling, more sophisticated lithic technologies, well adopted lithic combination, symbolic expression and artistic impression have been flourished within the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic transitional period. However, anatomical features continue to provide that the onset of modern human had been initiated from 100,000 years ago. Highly likely, the chronological gap between the 100,000Bp and 40-50,000BP was caused by mainly matter of cultural learning and group size.
