寺院의 여러 가지 기능과 역할을 알아보기 위하여 불교가 어떠한 근원적인 의미를 가지고 있는지 매우 중요하다. 먼저 寺院를 전체적으로 볼 때 하나의 塊體를 가진 조형성으로 볼 수가 있겠다. 그래서 造形性을 형태를 가진 像으로 보고, 이 像의 탄생을 살펴보기 위하여서는 像의 탄생을 禪과 藝術을 통한 表現에서 찾아본다. 따라서 우선 이것을 硏究함에 있어서 먼저 인간의 보편적이고 감각적인 관점에서 살펴보았다. 像의 탄생과 인간의 감각적인 것에 대한 관점을 먼저 살펴보고 像의 의미 그리고 佛身과의 관계에서 형상의 의미와 발생을 경전 속에서 살펴보았다. 특히 기존 불멸후 무불상시대에 대한 관점이 불타의 가르침에 충실한 조형으로 한 시대를 풍미한 것으로 밝혀졌고 그 후 불상의 출현은 32상 80종호의 像을 완전하게 하기 위한 의궤에 의해서 禪의 형태로 중생에게 전달하려는데 그 의미가 있었다. 불교의 교리는 형상에 대한 본질적 의미가 잘 표현되어 있었고, 이 형상을 바라보고 느낌을 갖는 인간과의 상관관계도 잘 설명해주고 있다. 특히 선종의 미학적 미학적인 관점은 선과 예술적인 표현을 통해서 결국 깨달음의 세계로 인도하는 매개로써 그 기능을 다하고 있음을 알 수가 있었다. 결국 상에서 나타난 아름다움은 미학으로서 깨달음을 상징하는 것으로 결론 내려진다.

It is very important to understand the ultimate significancy of Buddhism, in order to see various functions of temple. Such a perfect temple like Seokbul-Sa in Toham mountain can be seen total as a great sculptural body. In this study sculpture is taken to be a matter with form. The birth of matters is inquired into the expression of Zen and Art. I researched first the humanistic universal and sensuous standpoint to show it. And then the birth of matter and the meaning of it, and its relation to Buddha body could be seen through the Sturas understanding. In this study, the view on Non Buddhist Image Age proves that Non Image had dominated in that age as the image in itself which was faithful to Buddha's teaching. Thereafter people began to sculpture Buddhist Image so that they wanted to communicate the matter of 32 phrenological interpretations and 80 kinds of them in the form of Zen completely. Between the doctrins of Sutras we can see the ultimate meaning of matter, and its relation to us who watch and feel it. It is the ultimate significancy of Buddhist Image, the matter. This study found that especially aesthetics viewpoint of Zen Buddhism has the ultimate role to lead people to Enlightenment through artistic expression. In conclusion, the beauty in Buddhist Image is the symbol of and for aesthetic Enlightenment.
