미국 기숙학교의 특성 분석

An Analysis of the Characteristics of Boarding Schools in U.S.A

본 연구는 우리나라에서 기숙형 공립고 제도의 시행을 앞두고, 기숙학교 운영의 시사점을 얻기 위해, 기숙학교제도가 비교적 발달한 미국의 기숙학교 특성을 분석하는 것이 주된 목적이다. 이를 위해 미국의 우수 기숙학교 10개교를 선정하여 건학이념, 교육과정 편성․운영, 교직원 인사, 기숙사 현황 등 10개 영역에서 그 특성을 분석하였다. 본 연구결과를 통해 얻게 된 우리나라에서 기숙학교 운영을 위한 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기숙학교 운영은 철저한 건학이념을 바탕으로 해야하며, 전인교육을 지향해야 한다. 둘째, 기숙학교는 소규모 학급을 지향하여 교사-학생 사이의 친밀도를 높여야 한다. 셋째, 기숙학교의 교사들은 기본적으로 학생들과 함께 거주하며 기숙프로그램에 참여해야 한다. 넷째, 기숙학교의 성공적 운영을 위해서는 우수한 교사를 확보해야 한다. 다섯째, 기숙학교의 교육과정 편성·운영의 자율권이 보장되어야 한다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of American boarding schools, in order to get some lessons for Korean public boarding high schools ar their inception. Ten American distinguished boarding schools were selected and analyzed their characteristics based on ideology of foundation. curriculum operations, teacher selection, and so on. Some of the implications of American boarding schools may be listed as follows: First, we have the hints that boarding schools thoroughly should be based on the ideology of foundation and pursue the education for the whole man. Second, boarding schools have to be equipped with small size classes to make friendly interaction between teachers and students. Third, boarding school teachers have to dwell in school dormitory to become intimate with their students. Fourth, excellent teachers should be secured for the success of boarding schools. And last, the autonomy of curriculum development and operation should be guaranted at public boarding high school.
