A Comparative Study on the Duration in 1982 and 2009 Institute Cargo Clauses

Following an extensive period of world-wide consultation going back to 2006, the Joint Cargo committee released revised Institute Cargo Clauses A, B and C on 24 November 2008. The 1982 ICC cover commences "from the time the goods leave the warehouse" and ends on delivery at destination. In contrast, the 2009 ICC broadens the duration of cover by attaching from the time the goods are "first moved in the warehouse for the purpose of immediate loading into or onto the carrying vehicle for the commencement of transit". And the insurance will terminate on completion of unloading from the carrying vehicle at(rather than delivery to) the final warehouse or place of storage at the destination named in the contract of insurance. With these revisions, the coverage is widened to offer more protection to the assured.
