유아역사교육에 대한 유치원 교사들의 인식 및 요구

Kindergarten Teachers’ Perceptions on and Needs for Early Childhood History Education

본 연구는 유치원 교사들의 역사교육에 대한 인식을 알아보고, 실제로 유치원 현장에서 실시되고 있는 유아역사교육의 현황을 파악하고, 효과적인 역사교육을 실시하기 위한 교사의 요구를 분석함으로써 유아기에 적합한 유아역사교육을 실행하는데 필요한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하는 목적에서 이루어졌다. 이를 위하여 전국 공사립 유치원에 근무하는 357명의 교사들을 대상으로 유아역사교육에 대한 인식, 현황 및 요구를 설문조사하였다. 본 연구의 결과 대부분의 유치원 교사들은 유아역사교육이 필요한 것으로 인식하고 있었으며, 우리나라에 대한 애정과 자부심을 갖도록 하기 위해서 유아역사교육이 필요하다는 응답이 많았다. 유아역사교육의 방법은 전통놀이를 통한 교육, 문화 유적지 답사, 동화책 활용 등이 적합하다는 견해가 주를 이루었다. 또한 유아역사교육의 실시 현황에 대해 알아본 결과 역사적 지식과 교육방법을 잘 모르거나 역사교육을 위한 자료 및 준비 부족의 이유로 유치원에서 역사교육을 충분히 실시하지 못하는 것으로 나타났으며, 유아역사교육은 특정 생활주제를 다룰 때 주로 이루어지는 것으로 조사되었다. 유치원 교사들은 효과적인 유아역사교육을 위해 역사교육 자료의 개발 및 보급, 역사교육 프로그램의 개발, 교수 학습 방법에 대한 교사 직무연수 등을 희망하였다.

The purpose of this study was to examine kindergarten teachers’ perceptions on and practices of early childhood history education as well as needs experienced by these teachers as they strive to provide appropriate history education for young children. Questionnaires were distributed to kindergarten teachers throughout various areas in Korea. A total of 357 questionnaires from kindergarten teachers were analyzed. The findings of this study indicated that most of the teachers perceived the importance of history education in early childhood because history education fosters pride of the nation in young children’s mind. The teachers mentioned that traditional plays, field trips to historical places, and using children’s history books were appropriate methods for early childhood history education. They felt that they were not able to provide appropriate history education for young children due to their lack of adequate knowledge in history and teaching strategies as well as lack of effective educational materials for history education. They strongly expressed the needs for development and distribution of materials for and programs of early childhood history education. They also required in-service training on early childhood history education.
