춘향전 새 이본 「옥중향(獄中香)」 개관

몽련(夢蓮) 송헌석(宋憲奭)이 개작한 「옥중향」은 활자본 형태로 1927년에 발표된 작품이다. 지금까지 옥중화계 춘향전 이본으로 「옥중향」의 존재가 알려져 있지 않았는데, 이번에 그 원문을 처음 공개하고 그 작품세계를 소개하고자 했다. 「옥중향」은 조선전매협회에서 발행한 『전매통보(轉賣通報)』라는 잡지에 총 10회에 걸쳐 연재된 작품으로 단행본으로 따로 간행되지 못햇다. 그래서 일반인이 쉽게 「옥중향」을 읽거나 그의 존재를 알기는 어려웠을 것으로 판단된다. 「옥중향」은 이해조가 쓴 「옥중화」의 기본 서사 골격을 충실히 따르면서, 합리적 서사 구성 및 표현을 추구하고, 축약과 생략, 그리고 새로운 이야기의 추가 또는 확장 서술을 적절히 구사하는 방식으로 서사의 긴장감을 높이고 흥미를 배가시킨 작품으로 평가될 만하다. 또한 완판본 춘향전이나 신재효본 「춘향가」, 「남원고사」 등에 비해 갈등 구조와 대립이 첨예하게 나타나 있지 않지만, 개화기 의식과 근대 독자를 고려한 어휘 및 표기를 사용하고, 당시 인기를 누렸던 창극 대본 형식을 그대로 차용하고 있는 점도 유의할 필요가 있다. 특히 형식적·내용적 측면에서 「옥중화」와 비교했을 때, 「옥중향」은 「옥중화」의 일방적 모방이라기보다 20~30년대 서울지역 독자들을 고려한 변개의 흔적이 보인다. 그밖에 「옥중화」에는 없으나 「남원고사」에 등장하는 ‘짝타령’, 그리고 ‘다른 여인의 무덤에서 통곡하는 이야기’등의 화소 삽입은 「옥중향」이 「옥중화」외에 또 다른 이본을 참고했을 가능성을 시사한다. 1930년대 초 춘향전이본 연구에서 작품명만 언급되었을 뿐 실체를 알 수 없었던 「옥중향」의 새 발굴·소개는 춘향전 이본 연구의 폭을 넓힐 수 있다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다 하겠다.

Okjunghyang(獄中香) as a varinat of Chunhyangjeon(春香傳) was written by Song Heon-Seok(宋憲奭) in 1927. This different version was published not in book form, but serially in Jeonmaetongbo(轉賣通報) which ran a serial in ten parts. It`s one of the reason why Okjunghyang didn`t become known to us until now. Okjunghyang is an adaptation from Okjunghyang(獄中香) by Lee Hae-Jo(李海朝). The former is based on narrative plot of the latter`s work, but the former tried to adapt from the latter with the way of pursuing reasonable description and logical narrative structure. In addition, application of marking method and lexicon suitable for modern reader`s taste of Seoul in the 1920`s~1930`s in Okjunghyang is different from Okjungwha. And it also distinguishes Okjunghyang from Okjungwha that the former has insertion of a ballad `partner-taryong` and of a story which a hero is crying in front of unknown woman`s tomb by mistake and is close to get whipped. It is true that Okjunghyang had already introduced as a variant of Okjunghyangjeon in the 1930`s, but unfortunately, after that period, this work never have mentioned for some unknown reason, and today nobody has known existence of Okjunghyang. It is also significant in a respect that this study provides opportunity of revaluation and new concern about a variant of Okjunghyangjeon which we have forgot until now.
