The purpose of this study is to examine "Teachers" Competition for English Teaching Improvement" which has implemented as a political support for English education innovation by the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Department since 2006, therefore providing suggestions for successful implementation of the competition. Drawing upon the analysis of the 76 English classes submitted for the competition, the study found that the classes were likely to focus primarily on improving students' productive skill of speaking by task-based teaching. There were few exemplary English classes using different teaching methods, such as team-teaching classes with native English speaker teachers or ICT/Multimedia-assisted English classes. This tells that the competition would be necessary to encourage teachers to develop English classes with a variety of teaching purposes and methods. The result of the survey with 33 competition participant teachers, examiners, and managers revealed some problems of the competition in terms of managing the competition, establishing ways to evaluate English classes, and organizing competition examiners. This study suggests that it would serve as a valuable government support to promote teachers' motivation for improving their English teaching by distributing exemplary English classes to schools, provided the competition solves the problems revealed in the present study.
