The Situation and the Problem of Study on the Śūnyatā Theory of Madhyamaka in South and North Korea

The purpose of this paper is to look into the situation and the problem of the study on the Śūnyatā theory of Madhyamaka in south and north Korea. So, present writer examine some writings which are writed by south and north Korean scholars in modern times. As the result of the examination, present writer confirm some things as follow. The study on the Śūnyatā theory of Madhyamaka in south Korea seems to have two tendencies. The one is looking upon the Śūnyatā as really, and the other one is explaining the Śūnyatā theory through Pratītyasamutpāda theory. On the other hand, the problems of the study are two kinds also. The one is distorting the text by explaining it through some conclusions which is previously seted up by oneself, and the other one is hastily asserting some conclusions before presenting textual basis. Present writer think of that those problems arise from which the text of Madhayamaka have not been translated into korean, and the scholars are difficult to find the result of study on that topic performed before. The study on the Śūnyatā theory of Madhayamaka in north Korea seems to lack of scholastic research by influence of the 'Subject Thought'. So, it seems moving onward in critical or political standpoint chiefly. Namely, the study of north Korea seems to lack of exact and correct understanding about Śūnyatā theory of Madhayamaka by political interference.
