원격대학생의 학업중단에 관한 성인교육학적 연구

A Study on Adult Learner's Non-persistence in Distance Higher Education in the Perspective of Adult Education

원격대학은 학점은행제, 독학학위제와 함께 성인학습자들에게 고등교육 수준의 학력 취득의 기회를 제공하는 대표적인 학력보완교육제도이다. 원격대학은 성인학습자들의 고등교육 참여 기회를 확대하는 데 크게 기여했지만 한편으로 입학자의 상당수가 졸업에 이르기 전에 학업을 중단하는 문제로 인해 이에 관한 학문적 연구들이 꾸준히 이어져 왔다. 이 연구는 원격대학 학업 중단자들에 대한 전기적 면담을 통하여 이들의 삶의 맥락에서 원격대학 학업중단이 어떠한 의미를 지니는지 분석하고 이를 통해 학업중단 현상이 성인학습 연구와 교육 실천에 주는 시사점을 탐색하였다. 연구의 결과, 학습자의 관점에서 본 학업중단 현상은 ‘교육적 실패’라기보다는 학습생활과 괴리된 교육제도에 대한 학습자의 ‘거부’, 학습목표의 성취에 의한 학업의 ‘완료’, 대안적 학업의 장으로의 ‘이동’, 또는 학업의 ‘유보’라는 의미를 지니고 있었다. ‘학업중단’의 과정과 의미들을 통해 볼 때 성인학습자에게 근본적인 것은 ‘학업생활’이 아니라 ‘학습생활’임을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로 본 연구결과는 학습자의 ‘부적응’만을 문제시하던 학교중심적 패러다임에서 벗어나 평생학습 관점에서 학업중단에 관한 연구관점을 재정립해야 할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

Distance University is one of the well-known alternatives to a Bachelor's Degree that offers an opportunity to receive an academic background of a higher education level for an adult learner along with Academic Credit Bank System and Bachelor's Degree Examination for Self-Education. Although Distance University has greatly contributed to the extension of the opportunity of receiving Bachelor's Degrees for adult learners, on the other side, a great proportion of entering students stopped their studies before they reached their graduation. In this study, the retention was reflected not from an educator's point of view, but from a learner's point of view, and, then, discussed the systematic limitations in Distant University. The result shows that the retention issue may imply various meanings, such as the learners' 'rejection' of the rigidity and one-sidedness of the educational system, 'a completion' of study by achieving educational goal, 'a transfer' to another alternative location of education, or 'a withholding' of study, rather than 'an educational failure'. However, stopping study reveals that what is essential for an adult learner is not a scholastic life, but a learning life. This study suggests that we need to make a shift from a conventional schooling paradigm, which only focuses on a maladjustment of the learners, and then reshape the perspective of research on the retention from a lifelong learning perspective.
