로티(Richard Rorty)의 우연성(contingency)과 교화(edification)

본 논문의 목적은 Rorty의 경이적이며 감동적인 철학적 화두인 우연성을 이해하는 데 있다. 특히, 그가 주장하는 언어 및 공동체의 우연성과 교화와의 관련성을 이해하려고 한다. 그는 언어의 선천성과 공동체의 절대성을 기초로 한 전통적인 체계철학으로부터 형성된 진리와 가치를 가르치는 과정을 교육으로 보았다. 그러나 그는 이와 같은 전통적인 교육의 형식보다도 언어의 우연성과 공동체의 우연성을 토대로 새로운 자유주의 공동체의 문화를 꿈꾸는 교화철학을 바탕으로 교화의 형식을 제안하였다.

The purpose of this paper is to understand the contingency on the philosophical subject of Rorty. Especially, it is to understand the relationship between the contingency of the language and a community, and edification. Rorty said that an education is a teaching process of a truth and value formed from the traditional philosophy on the basis of innateness of language, absoluteness of a community. But he said that an edification is a teaching process on the basis of new edify philosophy formed from the contingency of language and a community. Rorty criticized the traditional education which pursue the fixed truth on the reality. He emphasize an edificating conversation which challenges to new vocabulary, because the existing vocabulary is one vocabulary on the reality. Accordingly, teachers must develop a concrete edification program to practice on the special action time and Saturday or holiday studying time. Until now, to developing democratic society the function of education is emphasized which makes an nonhuman individual and organization in order to protect rationalization and universalism with an ideal hope as an absoluteness of the fixed community. But human in the democratic society must cognize as a freedom being by realizing the contingency of community and dissolving the fixed purpose of community. Rorty suggest an edification which excludes of itself the apotheosized traces of individual and organization, takes away nonhuman power in the community.
