Educational Discussion and Conceptual Analysis about John Dewey‘s Intelligence

본 연구의 목적은 Dewey의 지성 개념을 명료화하여, 교육현장에 시사점을 얻는데 있다. Dewey는 지성을 과학적 사고방법이라 하였다. 과학적 사고방법으로서의 지성은 반성적 사고과정의 특징을 지닌다. 또한 지성은 자연 과학을 탐구하는 방법이지만 사회문제에도 적용될 수 있다. Dewey는 이것을 사회적 지성이라 하였다. 이러한 Dewey의 지성 개념은 오늘날 우리의 교육현장에 많은 시사점을 주고 있다. 첫째, 지성의 개념은 이성의 개념과는 달리 과학적 사고 방법으로 인식되어야 한다. 그러므로 학습자는 자신의 지성을 계발시켜 삶의 과정에서 직면하게 되는 문제를 스스로 해결할 수 있는 능력을 계발시키도록 노력해야 한다. 둘째, 지성의 특성은 과학적 사고 방법에 기초한 반성적 사고과정이다. 교육자는 학습자에게 반성적 사고를 단계별로 실험할 수 있는 교육적 환경을 제공할 수 있도록 노력해야 한다. 셋째, 지성은 과학적 사고방법에서 출발하고, 반성적 사고과정의 특성을 지닐 뿐만 아니라 사회적 지성의 특징을 지닌다. 따라서 교육자는 학습자가 건전한 사회에 입문할 수 있도록 사회적 환경의 축소화된 개념 구조를 제시할 수 있도록 노력해야 한다.

The purpose of this paper is to get suggestion to the field of education by clarification of Dewey's concept of intelligence. Dewey said that intelligence is a scientific thinking method. The characteristic of intelligence as a scientific thinking method is a reflective thinking process. The intelligence is a searching method for the natural science though it could be applied even in social problem. Dewey called it a social intelligence. Such Dewey's concept of intelligence gives following suggestion to the current education field. First, concept of intelligence should be recognized as a scientific thinking method, unlike concept of reason. Therefore, a student must develop his own intelligence and endeavor to develop the ability to solve by oneself the problem confronting with process of life. Second, the characteristic of intelligence is a reflective thinking process that is founded on a scientific thinking method. So, the teacher must endeavor in order to provide an educational environment for student to test step by step the reflective thinking. Third, the intelligence start from the scientific thinking method, the quality of intelligence is a reflective thinking process and a social intelligence. Accordingly, the teacher must endeavor to provide the reduced concept structure of social environment to a student, who will be able to enter into the wholesome society.
