격물치지와 도덕교육

Investigation of Things, Extension of Knowledge and Moral Education.

격물치지는 지식 탐구와 인식의 확대 혹은 완성을 의미한다. 이 개념은 인간이 자신과 세계에 대한 인식을 확대하거나 지식을 완성하기 위한 철학적 활동을 나타내며, 동시에 교육적 행위의 핵심이 된다. 본 연구는 철학적 탐구 방법으로서 지식 추구의 유학적 논리를 탐색하기 보다는 교육적 행위의 중심으로서 격물치지의 공부 방법과 그 논리를 규명하는데 관심을 갖는다. 유학의 공부론은 [소학공부], [대학공부]의 두 단계로 나누어진다. 소학교육의 단계는 학생들이 성인(聖人)이 되기를 스스로 기약하여 그들로 하여금 성인의 자질을 갖추게 하는 단계이고, 대학 교육은 성인이 되기 위한 지식과 식견을 배양하는 단계이다. 격물치지공부는 바로 사람들이 교육을 통하여 성인이 되기 위한 공부의 출발이 된다. 특히 격물치지는 유학사상의 교육적 이상과 교육의 방법적 원리를 다루고 있는 『대학』의 8조목에서 공부의 첫 단계로 제시되고 있다. 격물치지에 관한 논의는 인간의 인격적 성장과 수양의 문제를 다루고 있는 현대 도덕교육의 방향 및 방법과 관련하여 의미있는 시사점을 제공해 줄 수 있다.

Ke-wu-chih-chih(格物致知) means Investigation of Things, Extension of Knowledge. Ke-wu-chih-chih in Confucianism is represented as a philosophical activity that expands the understanding for the world and human beings and completes their knowledge, and also is the core point of the educational activity for human beings. This paper treats educational perspectives rather than philosophical logics in the theory of Ke-wu-chih-chih. Confucian educational theory generally divide into two steps; The Elementary Learning(Hsio Hsueh) and The Great Learning(Ta Hsueh). The great goal of Confucian education is to become a Sage(sheng jen). Elementary learning step emphasizes that cultivates the fundamental quality to become a Sage. Great learning is the step that cultivates an insight and knowledge to become a Sage. Ke-wu-chih-chih as a Confucian learning theory in The Great Learning provide us with meaningful suggestions for recent moral education theory and practice.
